Kitchen Blues

The owners wanted to revamp their kitchen without spending a bundle.  They were worried about moving walls and adding beams, but adding beams and moving walls aren't that expensive. Opening the walls created the kind of kitchen that modern families want, one connected to neighboring spaces with an island for gathering and a sink that overlooks a private back yard.  What was a chopped up kitchen with eat in space from the 1940's turned into a kitchen with a great work triangle, ample storage and a spacious, elegant feel.

Every family / client has different requirements.  Where to put the dog bowls, dog toys, dog food so that the humans aren't tripping over them?  We aim to please all clients, the furry ones too.

Creating some space outside the kitchen work zone, for a "bar" with ample storage for things that aren't used on a regular basis when cooking, alleviates the cabinetry requirements for the work zone.  If it's used regularly, move it to cabinetry within the work triangle.  Here, the owners wanted a separate closet where they could re-use an existing door, and where they could store large amounts of paper/ dog food and cleaning products with space for a vacuum, broom and mops.

Often a Client will have some temporary items, like this seating, until they can choose the right furniture.  There are so many great options for counter seating, but the most important aspect is the correct height, which should hover around 12" between the counter and the seat for comfort.

From the owner:  "Working with Chris was wonderful! She is a fount of great ideas and loves what she does, and that translates into great design. She really sought to understand what we wanted and needed to optimize the space we had to work with. She listened carefully and was respectful of our ideas, no matter how idiosyncratic. We can't thank her enough for helping us transform our antiquated kitchen (with lots of workarounds) to a fully functional, beautiful space. "
